While the main conversation surrounding mouth care involves taking care of your teeth, it is equally important to take care of your gums. Advanced gum disease affects over 47% of adults over the age of 30. It is important to be aware of the risk factors of gum disease.

Gum disease is also called periodontal disease; it is primarily caused by a buildup of plaque on teeth. Plaque is comprised of bacteria, which combine into a sticky film. This film can develop both above and below the gum line. The bacteria not only erode teeth, but they can also infect the gum tissues. This results in gum disease.

There are many risk factors that can increase your chances of developing periodontal disease. The primary risk factor is, of course, poor oral hygiene. However, other factors can play into it, such as:

-Smoking or chewing tobacco
-Crooked teeth (these can be hard to keep clean)
-Certain medications, including steroids, some types of anti-epilepsy medicine, cancer therapy drugs, and oral contraceptives
