Gum disease, also referred to as gingivitis, affects many people. However, with the proper understanding and care, it can be prevented in most cases. Here are some common risk factors that increase your chances of getting periodontal diseases.


Increased stress impedes your ability to fight infection. This damage to your immune system increases your risk for gum disease. Stress can also lead to a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), or bruxism. Both of these conditions exacerbate any existing gum disease and can increase the chances for periodontal pockets to form.


For some people, grinding teeth is simply a bad habit. For people with bruxism, however, tooth grinding and jaw clenching happen when the individual is sleeping and is hard to control. This grinding will not cause gum disease of itself, but it will make things worse if your gums are already infected.


Some people are simply more susceptible to gum disease than other people. However, this does not make getting gum disease an inevitability. With appropriately careful oral hygiene habits and regular bi-annual visits to the dentist, you can greatly reduce your risk for gum disease.

Tobacco Use and Smoking:

Using tobacco and other smoking drugs are tremendously damaging to not only your overall health but also to your oral health. Specifically, they put you at risk for periodontal disease. The frequency and length of time you have smoked is directly correlated to your risk for gingivitis and advanced gum disease.
